Carpenter Ants vs. Termites: How to Tell the Difference

Published 6/17/2026 ยท 5 min read

Two wood-destroying insects, two very different treatment plans. Here's how to tell them apart before calling for service.

The three visible differences

Carpenter ant swarmers have elbowed antennae, unequal wings, and a pinched waist. Termite swarmers have straight antennae, equal wings, and a broad waist.

What the frass tells you

Carpenter ants leave sawdust-like frass mixed with dead insect parts. Termites leave dry pellet-shaped droppings (drywood species) or mud tubes (subterranean species).
