Not every wasp nest is a problem. Here's the decision tree.
The 15-foot rule
If the nest is within 15 feet of a door, walkway, deck, or play area, treat it. Foot traffic within that distance is what triggers stings.
Size matters
Nests smaller than a golf ball in spring can be knocked down with a spray from a safe distance. Nests bigger than a softball, especially yellow jacket or hornet nests, are professional-only.
Ground nests are always professional
Yellow jacket ground nests are hidden and defended aggressively. Treat professionally at dusk, never during the day.
