Yellow Jacket Ground Nests: Why You Should Never Treat One Yourself
Published 11/13/2025 ยท 4 min read
Yellow jacket ground nests send more people to the ER than any other stinging insect. Here's the safe way to handle one.
Why they're the most dangerous
A single yellow jacket ground nest can hold 4,000โ5,000 wasps by late summer. Vibrations from a mower or footsteps can trigger a mass defense response โ dozens of stings within seconds.
What NOT to do
Don't pour gasoline. Don't flood it. Don't use hardware store spray during the day. Every one of these methods has produced serious hospitalizations in the Hudson Valley.
The professional method
Dusk treatment when foragers are inside the nest, professional-grade dust into the entrance, and a full return-check the next day. Never during peak daylight activity.
